GAME DESIGN | GAMIFICATION | TEXTILE

Paithani is a textile that originated in Paithan, Maharashtra. It has seen various empires and generations and hence there are numorous narratives that have trickled into its form, structure and symbolism, be it visual or non-visual.  The weavers' community needs recognition outside Maharashtra since weaving helps them make two ends meet. Though it is not a dying weave, the original Paithani is seeing a decline since the market demands more contemporary products and the weavers also feel the need to adapt to them.

Why & how

When the weaving process is gamified, the players have an interactive and memorable experience of understanding how a Paithani is woven. Instead of reading or a monotonous speech on how it is made, the players get first hand information through riddles and motifs about the various raw materials, patterns, historical facts, people and their stories through this game.

USER TESTING

The user testing enabled us to know how the game works and what is the complexity of the game for a player without any prior knowledge about Paithani.

For non-artists and non-designers the complexity of the game increases while players who have either exposure to the context or have studied it are able to crack the game easily.

This brings us to the conclusion that the primary target audience is textile students and broadly design students.
